We think that human relationships are more powerful than any algorithm.
Don't get us wrong—algorithms work just fine. However, we don't think they're everything. A lot of the buzz and money on the internet has been directed toward companies with the latest and greatest technologies and algorithms. Websites that think for you, analyze each and every purchase or click you make, and, in general, try to improve the information you gather while searching, browsing, and spending time on the internet. This is great and all, but we would like to pose a serious question:
Would you rather be informed by a number-crunching computer, or by your best friend?
We're betting on the latter. While technology and algorithms might help improve the information you receive to a degree, you trust other people—especially people you know—more than just about anything else. We can't even take credit for that point. Research has proven it, and the numbers are astounding.
From our perspective, the most exciting movements on the web are not those focused on developing new technologies and endlessly compressing you down into a series of equations, but those that empower and extend human interaction and relationships. This, we believe, represents the true and original promise of the internet. The promise of a means through which you can stay better connected to and better informed by the people you personally know, trust, and love. Your family. Your friends. Your lovers. Your colleagues. Your network, whomever and wherever they are.
We believe people have been doing the right sort of things all along: building relationships that enrich all aspects of their lives. Our job is just to make that easier and even more powerful.
True, it's more easily said than done, but we're making it happen anyway.
